Ethan loves to count. He can count to 40 and is learning to count by fives. I use the "Paint" application to show him numbers and a few YouTube videos to practice counting.
Here are some "hands on" ideas to compliment the website. You will need...
The first step is to teach toddlers to recognize different coins and learn how much they are worth. After a couple of lessons, Ethan was able to recognize pennies.
The Activity
I help Ethan count and put five pennies in the jar. I try to reinforce as often as possible, "If you put 5 pennies in the jar, you can have a nickel. Five pennies are equal to one nickel." We continue this until he has about three or four nickels. I try to appreciate attention span of a two-year-old :)
- 1 Mason Jar
- Coins, separated into plastic bags

The Website as a Teaching Aid
We also use the "Counting Coins" website as he puts pennies in the jar. Every time a penny is dropped in the jar, I click on a penny from the graph.

Spiritual Lessons
There are so many spiritual lessons that can be taught about money. Here are a few ideas:
We can gain eternally valuable characteristics from dealing with money. We learn patience when we save money (2 Peter 1:6). Sacrifice is learned by paying tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:8). It is one way to take care of others (Proverbs 14:31). We learn to prioritize what we treasure when dealing with money. "But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal" (Matthew 6:20).
